How To Find Book Publishers

Written a book, or planning to write one, and wondering how to get it published? It is important to find the right publisher but this is not as easy as it sounds. Publishers are very selective about the writers they accept and may not want to hear about your book at all. However, don't be discouraged if getting your book published is not as easy as you would wish, because there are loads of publishers out there, who accept books from different genres.

When your book is complete, and you have checked it for errors, your next step is locating a publisher. Many hopeful authors send their work blindly to any publisher that springs to mind - this is a mistake you should avoid. It is possible to find a publisher this way, but chances are slim; it makes far more sense to study several publishers to identify what their usual fare is, and to see whether you would fit in with the kind of writing they promote. This will take time, but it's not very complicated, and definitely worth the trouble, if it means getting your book published.

A really basic method of locating a publisher for your book is to get an author's printed resource guide - you can get guides for different genre, such as horror or humour. These guides offer up to date information about publishers (get the latest editions to ensure that the information is current). You can buy such guides both online or at a bookshop on land.

There are several of these printed resources available but the guides from Writer's Market are particularly good. These offer resources in a host of genres and are updated annually, so you will find the information contained in them relevant. You will get data about themes that publishers are interested in, what you need to know when you submit a manuscript, where to send your work and all kinds of useful hints and suggestions from writers with experience and an understanding of the industry.

Printed resource guides such as the ones from Writer's Market generally cost less than twenty dollars, but if you don't want to spend that, you find similar information on the net which you don't have to pay for. Searching online for data on publishers is feasible and mentioning the genre will narrow down the results when you include, for example, the words 'adult humour' in your search phrase.

When you search online, you will gain access to sites that display lists of publishers, either with contact and other details attached, or with links to the publishers' sites. These sites will also turn up on a regular internet search with regard to getting your book published.

Want to find the website of a particular publisher? A simple search online will give you the data you want. Most of these offer resources that are of interest to writers. For names of publishers, take a look around a book shop or even at your own books.

Be careful to choose the publisher who will be right for your book - try to pick one that is likely to be interested in the subject matter of your book, when you are getting your book published.
