Important Steps To Follow To Get Your Book Published

Is your objective as an author to get your work published? Ideally, there is a certain process consisting of several steps, which you need to consider in their order of importance when you are getting your book published.

Your first step would be, of course, to write the book. When you are deciding on the type of book to write, think carefully about whom you are writing for. Study the market and find out what kinds of books publishers are looking for. Many unpublished writers go in for the children's genre, under the mistaken impression that these are easier to write and sell. Of course, if you do think you can write a good children's book, go ahead.

Once your book is done, you have to proofread it thoroughly, several times before sending it to someone with a view to getting your book published. Ask people you know for help assessing and proofing your work if you are not planning to get the help of a professional editor. If your book is very long, you can ask friends or family to look over a few chapters each.

If you have already written your book or as soon as it is completed, there are steps that you will want to take before sending your completed manuscripts off to publishers. You will want to proofread your book, then proofread it again, and one more time for safe measure.

Literary agents are another option to consider when you want to see your book in print. Many authors, especially those writing books for children, have agents to help them with sales and deals. A literary agent is not essential when you want to get your work published, but it certainly helps a lot. Look for an agent whose fees are not exorbitant and whose clients speak well of him or her.

Without a literary agent, it will be entirely up to you to locate a publisher when you are getting your book published. So be as careful as an agent would on your behalf. Errors can cost you a lot, so study as many publishers as you can to get the maximum information. You can spend some time to go online to learn more, or refer to a guide like the Writer's Market.

Why do you need to find out information about publishers? For one thing, you will find that specific publishers have specific limitations and rules - for instance, some publishers will not accept books unless they come through a literary agent, or if you have submitted your book to other publishers; some will only accept books at certain times of the year. So if you have this kind of information about publishers, you will not be wasting your time by sending work to someone who will not accept it any way.

Getting your book published also involves a certain amount of faith that things will turn out well. Don't despair too easily; nobody ever said getting your book published would be easy! It is a bit of a Catch-22 situation in that publishers don't readily accept work from unpublished authors. But if you get over ten rejections, consider making changes in your book that might make it more acceptable for publication. Perhaps your story could use brushing up, or maybe you want to think about a layout change. See what you can do.

When you are in the process of getting your book published, the steps we have discussed are not the only things you will have to do. Those we have outlined here, however, are the most important and you should pay attention to them. Study the matter carefully before you take your book to a publisher.
